Product Name Analysis:

What is most interesting about the name of this bar is the history associated with it. Fry's chocolate cream bar was first manufactured in 1866, which makes it the oldest bar I've ever tried, and one of the oldest original candy bars still in existence. The company that made it was called J.S. Fry and Sons. J.S. Fry and Sons was the first company ever to make a molded chocolate bar for consumption rather than for baking. The company merged with Cadbury in 1919. The name itself is descriptive and useful. The bar is "dark chocolate with a fondant centre."

Packaging Analysis:

The packaging is fairly conservative, as befits a bar with so much history. The package is dark blue with a large curved lighter blue streak. The wording is blue with gold trim and the letters are thin and elegant. On the right side of the package there is a depiction of the bar itself. The bar's white filling is sparkling as if it were made of diamonds. This is chocolate bar that is very self-assured.

Visual Analysis:

The bar is dark and glossy, and is shaped somewhat like a piece of decorative moulding. The word "Fry" is printed on top seven times in seven small segments, which visually divides the bar into nice, even pieces. However, the segmentation isn't deep, and it is difficult to break off just one piece. The bottom of the bar is unadorned, but with some random shapes leftover by the manufacturing process. The filling is white and glossy, and although it doesn't look as gem-like as the package suggests, it isn't far off.

Flavor Analysis:

I was surprised when I detected a note of orange flavoring in the filling. I generally expect things that are pure white to taste like vanilla. The chocolate is much darker and less sweet than in most candies, and it seems to be a higher quality chocolate than is used in most candy bars. To bear up my opinion in this case, I will mention that this bar actually contains cocoa butter and has neither corn syrup nor hydrogenated oil.

Mouthfeel:

Very smooth and creamy, both the chocolate and the filling.

Summary:

I really appreciate the higher quality of the chocolate in this bar. However, I did not particularly enjoy the filling-it had a chemical note that turned me off a bit.
