Product Name Analysis:
The Milky Way name has been around so long that I automatically associate it with the chocolate bar before I associate it with the galaxy. It is important to remember that the European Milky Way is completely different than the American Milky Way to avoid disappointment!
Packaging Analysis:
The package is shooting for "cuteness." The main text is white and is written in a font that looks soft and has rounded edges-if I could give the font a name I would call it "marshmallow." This is effective because the candy bar's filling is a "light whipped white centre (sic)." The package also features a friendly-looking alien who seems to be waving hello to the consumer, a red shooting star, and a heart that is light brown on the left and white on the right--most likely indicating that the bar inside the wrapper is milk chocolate with the aforementioned pale filling. The edges of the package are dark blue and are spangled with light blue stars. I think that the alien and the blue background with stars fit the bar, as does the shooting star (which is red, and thus gives the package a bit more color), however, I find the heart to be extraneous-everything else is space themed, and it just seems out of place and unnecessary. Overall though, I think the packaging works well.
Visual Analysis:
The bar is small and is coated in light colored chocolate with a design drizzled on top, again in milk chocolate. The pattern appears a bit like a simplified rendering of DNA strands. It has two lines that cross each other, flare out, and cross each other again. The bottom has the strange pattern that I believe is present on other mass-marketed candy bars. It looks kind of like the reading from a seismograph. When I cut the bar open to see the filling I found that it is pale tan rather than white, which doesn't bother me, but did surprise me. It also appears fairly compact rather than fluffy, which may be a result of its long journey from Europe.
Flavor Analysis:
Very sweet and milky. Because the filling is so mild, I couldn't really get a sense of its flavor. Mostly the bar tasted like milk chocolate with a particularly milky aftertaste. I guess calling it a Milky Way is appropriate! After tasting it again, I detecting a little bit of a malted flavor in the filling.
Mouthfeel:
The filling had a bit of a grainy consistency, as if the sugar crystals were not completely dissolved. There is not a lot of texture and my teeth met with no resistance as I bit through the bar. For that reason, I didn't find the experience of chewing this bar to be a satisfying one, it was like chewing a cloud.
Summary:
Although I enjoyed the malted milky note I picked up at the end of my tasting, this is not a bar that I would be likely to purchase for myself or as a gift. My overall impression is that the bar is too sweet and not flavorful enough.
