Product Name Analysis:
The word bounty has positive connotations of plenty. It is a homey and comforting word that I wouldn't necessarily associate automatically with coconut bar (When I think of a bounty bar, I imagine something that has peanuts and perhaps dried fruit and which could sustain a person on a long hike). However, knowing that it is a coconut bar, the name causes me to envision a super coconut-y coconut bar. In that respect I think it's a good name. However, one side of the package has the text " -2-Bounty -2-." This might indicate that there are two smaller chocolate bars inside rather than one large one, or perhaps it refers to the dark chocolate coating. Perhaps the original milk chocolate bar was "-1- Bounty -1-." Either way, seeing the number made me think "movie sequel" rather than "ooh, something to eat."
Packaging Analysis:
The packaging tells you a lot about what to expect inside this bar. The background is a tropical sunset over the ocean, with a small island covered in palm trees on the left, and an open coconut on the right. That it is sunset gives the packaging an exotic feeling, which fits in with the fact that the bar is covered in dark chocolate. The product name looks like it could have been carved out of pure white stone-the edge of each letter is slightly rough, and a dark shadow drops off of each letter onto the sunset background. The font makes me think of tiki torches or perhaps of Easter Island. In addition, the white letters with dark shadows are like the white coconut bar with dark chocolate. I think this package really works.
Visual Analysis:
The bar does indeed come in two tablet shaped sections. The dark chocolate covering is very shiny, and the top of the bar is decorated with three small waves of chocolate. The bottom of the bar is printed with a repeating pattern of palm trees and the word "Bounty." Much cooler than the bottoms of other bars I've seen. This bar did not cut cleanly. The coconut ended up streaked with dark chocolate, and a couple clumps of coconut stuck to my knife. However, the interior looks pretty much as I expected. After examining the bar, I'm fairly sure that this is practically the same as the Mounds bar that is sold in the United States.
Flavor Analysis:
I'm kind of a sucker for coconut, and I prefer dark chocolate to light, so the flavor combination of this bar worked well for me. However, I found it a bit too sweet (as usual).
Mouthfeel:
The dark chocolate is just slightly chalky, and after swallowing, I ended up with a few stringy pieces of coconut still in my mouth. However, I realize that these are the sacrifices one must make to get that yummy coconut flavor.
Summary:
Good idea overall and good packaging as well. However, I'm not blown away by the bar itself. It kind of made me crave a bowl of coconut sticky rice from a Thai restaurant.
